[bug-gs] CMR12 Type 1 font and AFPL gs-8.1x

Hi all,
I feel there is something strange going on with the rendered size of
characters when displaying certain Type 1 fonts at certain
resolutions. This may be a defect in the font, a problem with
ghostscript, a problem with my computer & operating system (basically
SuSE Linux 8.2), ...
I have attached a .tar.gz-archive with an example (source & ps) and
output produced with different options to (GNU) gs-7.07 and (AFPL)
gs-8.14.
gs-test.tex - a small LaTeX file to reproduce the PostScript file
gs-test.ps - the postscript file, contains/uses the CMR12 Type 1 font
of the American Mathematical Society (AMS)
gs-7.07-test-75.png - the output from gs-7.07, produced with the
command line:
gs-7.07 -sDEVICE=x11alpha -r75 -dDEVICEWIDTH=300 \
-dDEVICEHEIGHT=100 -dQUIET -dSAFER gs-test.ps
and captured from screen. Note: my screen resolution is
% xdpyinfo |grep resolution:
resolution: 75x75 dots per inch
gs-test-r75.png and
gs-test-r72.png - the corresponding output from gs-8.14, produced with
the command line:
gs-8.14 -sDEVICE=x11alpha -r75 -dDEVICEWIDTH=300 \
-dDEVICEHEIGHT=100 -dQUIET -dSAFER gs-test.ps
and with -r72, respectively.
Note that in the example gs-test-r75.png, where the target resolution
matches the screen resolution, some characters are taller than others;
it looks really ugly. The ugly result persists for resolutions in the
range 73..76, while for -r77 it again looks quite ok, similar to -r72.
Can anybody reproduce this? If so, any explanations? If not, what
might I be doing wrong?
Cheers,
-Harald
