"gswin32c" indicates to me that you are running Ghostscript on Windows.  I
should have mentioned in my initial post that I have reproduced my problem
only on on FreeBSD 4.4 and Mac OS X 10.3.3.  I haven't tried it on any other
platforms.

The '--' option does not seem to play a role in my hanging problem.  Here is
an amended command, which produces the same behavior (on FreeBSD & Mac OS X)
as reported in my initial post:

gs -dBATCH -dMaxBitmap=50000000 -dNOPAUSE -sDEVICE=ppmraw -sOutputFile=out
814_test.pdf
