IMHO, having a device (pdfwrite) store state information in the imager_state
violates the design of the graphics library / device layer.

Perhaps setting a unique ID from PostScript into the SoftMask dict could be
used by the pdfwrite to detect the state change in the device so that the
'q ... Q' bracketing could be used around the SMask collection
(begin_transparency_mask ... end_transparency_mask).

In general, I am fairly certain that the graphics state changes of 'running'
the SMask painting operations need to be isolated from the Content stream
graphics state.

Since this now impinges on pdfwrite, I'm adding Ken to the CC list.
