I finally determined what my problem was and it was self-induced.
I decided to build ghostscript on a 32 bit machine that was in our lab area as
this machine's architecture is closer to that of the Blackfin. When I compiled
it, I noticed that the scalar alignments in arch.h were different than what I
had been compiling on the 64 bit machine. When I changed the 64 bit machines
values to the appropriate value, the garbage collection problem went away.
The program appears to work fine now.
