Thanks a lot for your comments, Ken.

Indeed I only have AFPL 8.54, which is to my knowledge the latest Win XP 
precompiled version available (got from http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/) and 
was my current version before I switch to GPL 8.70 and discover the problem 
with my old (but compact and by now still current) Acrobat version.

Anyway, all is OK to me and the story closed.
