By default pdfwrite attempts to 'auto rotate' pages so that the majority of the
text is horizontal. 

When text occurs in multiple orientations, the orientation chosen is the one
with the most text. If you then add more text in a different orientation that
orientation can suddenly become 'more dominant' and the page will be rotated to
make that text orient horizontally instead.

You can prevent the auto rotation by using -dAutoRotatePages=false on the
Ghostscript command line.
