I don't think anyone actually likes the autohell tools, but the damage to
sanity for a maintainer is slightly less working them than it would be trying
to manually support *every* combination of capability for every Unix-like
system.

There are examples of non-configure derived makefiles in the "base" directory
that you can use as a starting point to do your own "port" - probably
unix-gcc.mak would be a good starting point for you. It shouldn't be difficult
to get it working how you need.

Unfortunately, that still means running at least one of the third party library
configure scripts.


I don't think the version of sed is your problem: my test using gnu sed 4.1
worked just fine.

The only tool other than those you listed, that springs to mind is grep, but
there may be others - I'm not in a position to check right now.


Oh, and ranting about it doesn't help your cause.
