In fact, the format of the vertices is even simpler than before. They should
simply have sent: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

The stitch lines seen in the edited simplified version are due to the shading
having an alpha level of 0.5. This would seem to imply that the 'stitch lines'
we can see are where pixels are being written twice, and hence appearing
darker.

This doesn't explain why we get dark lines around the edge though.
Investigating more.
