You're trying to read a CUPS raster file, not a PS or PDF file -
Ghostscript/GSView cannot read CUPS raster files.

>From your initial report:
/usr/local/bin/gs -dQUIET -dPARANOIDSAFER -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -dNOMEDIAATTRS
-dDEBUG -sDEVICE=cups -sOUTPUTFILE=sam.ps -c -f sam.pdf


-sDEVICE=cups is telling Ghostscript to output a CUPS raster.

-sDEVICE=ps2write will give you a Postscript file.
