I've duplicated this with head (r12275), 9.01, and 9.00 and with Acrobat X,
Acrobat 9, and Acrobat 8, but not with Ghostscript nor Apple Preview.

It's a regression, older versions of Ghostscript generate files that Acrobat
read without complaint.  It started with:

Merge of icc_work branch into trunk.
