[gs-code-review] Re: Bug 688602 requires a fundamental change to the memory management.

Attaching a draft patch.
It is not debugged yet, but suggestions are welcome at this state.
The switch NO_INVISIBLE_LEVELS disables the new code.
When it is zero, the change should be algorithmically equivalent to 
the old code. The zero case is being tested now.
Then I'll test the case 1.
