It's not just PCL. David Suffield has a modification to do a similarly 
hacky sort of tagging and then send "KRGB" to the hplip printer driver 
suite either over ijs or cups raster. This is, as you say, essentially 
tagged RGB contone used to control black generation and halftone 
selection in a separate printer driver.

It it my hope that we can end up with this supporting his needs as well.
