Nelson Beebe probably has more experience building Ghostscript on more
different hardware and OS platforms than anyone else on this list: he's been
an invaluable resource for maintaining Ghostscript portability over the
years.  I trust anything he says about portability concerns.

(IMO, it's a minor tragedy that the Unix world didn't get its shared library
act together long before this: as Nelson observed, the technology had been
understood for a very long time, and even implemented successfully in
commercial OSs, before Microsoft popularized it in the form of DLLs.)
