You may want an API function for flushing the whole cache.  I can
imagine someone slipping up one day on versioning or maintaining
backward compatibility, and the cache polluting a system and causing
hard-to-reproduce user error reports.

Or, provide a separate utility that can wipe the cache (like a shell
script. :-)
