I've done what you have suggested. I converted different kinds of ps into
pdfs and checked them
with PDFAppraiser and I have roughly worked through the PDF/A spec. and
checked if the requirements
are met by reviewing the corresponding source code.

Most of the problems that occured while testing are font related issues. One
thing that confuses me a little bit
is that some truetype fonts I was using were included as Type1C fonts in the
produced pdf.

E.g. I used "Arial" and "Arial Black" in a word document and  I produced a
pdf. "Arial" is included as Type1C font in the pdf
and "Arial Black" is included as truetype font.
How can that be? FYI I'm using windows.
