Well, I'm no expert, but use.htm suggests -dNODISPLAY. However I'm not sure 
this is really measuring the performance. It might be better to modify the 
required device code to simply not output anything to the file ?

That seems to me the only way to be sure that you are rendering the data in 
exactly the same way as GS will normally do. This allows you to measure the 
raw speed without worrying about the overhead of writing to disk. NB the 
disk speed will still be important fore reading the input PostScript.
