Dear Ghostscript gurus,
My apologies if this inquiry is off topic for this list. I figure
that you would know the answer if anyone does.
Have there been any studies of the minimum resolution that's needed
to make a good quality halftone from a digital camera file?
Back when Adobe Level 1 interpreters roamed the earth, the rule of
thumb was "resolution should be at least twice the screen
frequency." For instance, a magazine quality 150-line screen
required an image file at 300 pixels per inch.
More recently, I've seen claims that this is overkill, and that you
can print quite successfully with 1.3 times the screen frequency. So
far, though, the evidence has been anecdotal and sparse.
Please feel free to reply to me on- or off-list.
-Peter
