I'm not sure what you mean by "negative know how" but both this
situation, and the black generation issues Ray described are real
problems when printing, which is why these things are selectable.

The flattening issue is another reason there are efforts to move
to direct printing from PDF, so the RIP itself can do the flattening
and handle this properly.
