Thx a lot. It seems to work fine now. However it seemed to me that arch.h is
used both for compiling for target and host. In this case it would be hairy for
several scenarios. You might want different arch.h files for host and target.
I'm not quite sure if autotools can do such things. Will do some research.

ah, thx. I added it to my patch stack What would actually happen, if the
compiler optimize these shift variables?

Glad to help. It was defintively no rocket science patch. Just couldn't  think
out anything more fancy. ;-)
