Thanks, Ralph. I opened this bug:
http://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=689648 , which contains
links to the full CUPS error log and the offending PDF file.

Is running the Debian 8.61 an issue? You think it's worth a shot, to try
a custom-compile installation of a newer version? (where would i find
that, actually?) The bug tracker form listed a 8.70 version as a
possible option.

Also, if you can recommend any techniques for advanced debugging more
than below, I'm interested.

Running the 'gs' command alone i get similar errors:
