[gs-devel] Massive increase of filesize after merging two PDFs

Hi,

I use gs to merge two 85 Kb PDFs (One Picture + Text). But the output file
is 560 Kb. I use the following command:

gs -dNOPAUSE -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOUTPUTFILE=output-test.pdf -dBATCH
file1.pdf file2.pdf

I also found a difference between the documents. If i copy/paste text from
the original file with my Adobe Reader to Notepad, I get the text. If I do
this with the merged file, it just get hieroglyphs. Even if I just have one
file (-dBATCH file1.pdf) the output is much much bigger than the input.

The big problem is, that a job will merge hundred of files every day and im
wasting space and bandwidth. Also the user can't copy/paste the text any
more.

Any idea what went wrong?

I tried it with GNU gs 7.05 on RHEL and GNU gs 8.15 on openSUSE 10.3.

Regards
Marc
