I heard the talk, but I don't agree with it. The x11alpha device has  
always had these bugs, but fixing them wasn't a priority when we  
didn't encounter them during normal development. On the other hand,  
hardly any one else uses it at all: the default viewers on free osen  
all use libpoppler now, everyone else uses the display device. The  
printing pipeline, which is how most free users use ghostscript  
doesn't use either x11 device. So while it's embarrassing, I don't  
think it's release critical.

Is consensus blowing the other way?
