As someone who actually uses gs from the command line, both to view ps
docs and to interactively test out PS code — it is often much faster
than the alternatives — I very much prefer having x11alpha as the
default.

A more useful change might be to default to BATCH, perhaps with a
single character option to delete BATCH from systemdict (I don’t
see an easy way to unset a «-d» from the command line...).  BATCH
is almost always desired when specifying files on the cli.  But
that can certainly wait for 8.64.
