I've taken the advice of other posters and made a bug report.

Attached to the bug is a graph of memory usage over the time of the job.
For a 20,000 page test file, 8.62 uses more memory than 7.07, but it
doesn't seem to be over consumption.
For the 8.62 job, last values reported by top was size - 52,140K, res -
31,340K, which is a fair bit less than say a java process.
