However when I try to open any ps file this jumps up to about 623 MB (probably near the upper limit of my machine.)<o:p></o:p></span></span></pre>

On opening GSview, I see it uses about 3Mbytes.
On opening a PS file within GSview (thus causing the opening of
Ghostscript), I see it jump to about 10Mbytes.
The only reason I can think of it jumping to 600Mbytes is because the
GSview display resolution is set to a large value such as 1200dpi.
Try setting this back to a reasonable value such as 96dpi.
Your email program produces some ghastly output. It doesn't include
a plain text version, and the HTML version is such that lines don't
wrap, making it difficult to read.
