ghostbot Welcome to #ghostscript. If you have a question, please ask it, don't ask to ask it. Do be prepared to wait for a reply as devs will check the logs and reply when they come on line. If you are looking for help or infomation about MuPDF, try the new #mupdf channel.07:00.20
wallbroken i want to ask you if is there some way to check if my printer driver are GDI or not07:00.43
my printer supports GDI, and PCL PostScript in emulated mode07:01.04
i want to ask you if is there some way to check if my printer driver are GDI or not10:34.32
my printer supports GDI, and PCL PostScript in emulated mode10:34.33
chrisl wallbroken: If there isn't anything in the driver settings that gives a hint, your best bet is to print something to a file, and open the file in a text editor - if it looks like Postscript, it's probably Postscript (something like "%!PS-Adobe-3.0" in the early part of the file)11:05.29

  chrisl ^11:13.37
chrisl Yes??11:14.26
wallbroken those are two prints to a file11:14.46
  can you check please?11:14.50
chrisl Well, given that the second line in both those says: "@PJL ENTER LANGUAGE = POSTSCRIPT" - I'd think that was a good hint11:15.30
wallbroken chrisl, but in my case, PCL and POSTSCRIPT are emulated languages11:17.31
  the native language is GDI11:17.39
  why i can't see anything about GDI?11:17.49
  http://support.brother.com/g/b/spec.aspx?c=us_ot&lang=en&prod=mfc7820n_all11:18.03
  Print LanguageWindows® GDI11:18.09
  EmulationPCL 6 & BR-Script 311:18.14
chrisl They are termed "emulated" because it's not Adobe Postscript, nor HP PCL11:18.25
wallbroken and what about GDI?11:18.48
chrisl What about GDI?11:18.56
wallbroken Print Language: Windows® GDI11:19.06
  that's from my printer's datasheet11:19.13
chrisl "GDI" is just a raster image format11:19.33
wallbroken what does it mean?11:20.05
  can you speak more clearly?11:20.11
chrisl GDI means Graphical Device Interface11:20.44
wallbroken I know11:20.56
but what's the answer to my question?11:21.04
chrisl Your printer driver is producing Postscript11:21.30
wallbroken Print Language: Windows® GDI11:22.57
  what about this?11:23.00
chrisl Your driver is not producing GDI output11:23.28
wallbroken why?11:23.36
chrisl Because it's a Postscript printer driver, I would think11:23.52
wallbroken http://support.brother.com/g/b/spec.aspx?c=us_ot&lang=en&prod=mfc7820n_all11:24.05
  please, see this link11:24.09
  Print Language: Windows® GDI11:24.17
  you are understanding the point?11:24.23
  i think not11:24.28
chrisl No, not even slightly11:24.36
wallbroken ok, get back again11:24.50
each printer got some printing language11:25.03
in my case there are 3 languages11:25.11
  one native languace called "GDI"11:25.20
and some other emulated languages called "PCL, PostScript"11:25.38
i tried all the driver the vendor is distributing11:25.54
i printend to a file with both of them11:26.07
and i get PCL or PostScript11:26.27
so, i'm not understanding why i do not get GDI11:26.47
which should be the main language of my printer11:26.57
chrisl Well, surely that's a question for Brother tech support? It's certainly no a Ghostscript question11:27.55
wallbroken no, it's a question about printing languages11:29.13
if the driver was GDI and i print to a file, i will get some GDI language text?11:29.45
chrisl GDI is, basically, a binary image format11:30.16
  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphics_Device_Interface#GDI_printers is a decent description11:31.42
wallbroken chrisl, already read it11:31.59
  i read all about 5 - 6 google results11:32.14
for my questions, there is no answer over google11:32.29
chrisl Unless I'm still not understanding, your question is why you are getting Postscript or PCL (rather than GDI) from your Bother printer's driver11:33.27
wallbroken yes11:33.53
chrisl Which sounds like a question that should go to Brother11:34.55
wallbroken you have something with GDI driver?11:35.14
i want to see how looks "print to a file"11:35.29
  with gdi driver11:35.32
chrisl It'll be binary11:35.45
FWIW, my printer does not seem to support GDI11:39.23
wallbroken chrisl, is there a free software for windows to open postscript files?11:41.05
chrisl Ghostscript - the subject of this channel..... https://ghostscript.com/11:41.35
wallbroken why some PDF printer needs ghostscript?11:42.43
  ?11:42.50
chrisl PDF printers work by installing a Postscript printer, capturing the Postscipt, and using Ghostscript to convert the Postscript into PDF11:43.24
Well, some using solutions other than Ghostscript, but same idea11:43.48
wallbroken and why there is not a native pdf printer?11:46.11
pdf is at the same level of ps11:46.20
chrisl What would be the advantage? A lot of work, for the same result11:46.56
wallbroken and why printers use postscript instead of pdf?11:47.50
  (phisical printers)11:48.04
chrisl The main reason is that Postscript is streamable, and has lower resource requirements, so the printers can be cheaper11:48.34
wallbroken i'm trying ghostscript to open .ps, but is so rude viewer, no way to zoom, pan, select...11:48.46
chrisl wallbroken: you might be more comfortable with http://gsview.com/11:49.43
wallbroken i installed it11:55.06
but i don't find it in quick start11:55.14
chrisl gsview isn't something I work on, so I can't really help11:56.10
wallbroken how could be the output to be accepted by the printer in gdi?12:01.12
  raw ?12:01.23
chrisl Sorry, I don't understand the question12:02.13
wallbroken if i get a .pcl file and upload it to the printer via ftp, it will be printed correctly.12:03.05
can i do the same by the GDI language?12:03.19
chrisl It's entirely dependent on the specific printer. Probably not via ftp though, for any printer12:04.23
