bodqhrohro_ By the way, why does running a second pass reduced PDF size from 18 MBs to 11.5 MBs? Looks like the order of parameters actually matters somehow.15:59.44
kens order of parameters does matter16:00.09
bodqhrohro_ Though it does not help with the downsampling issue. I thought it can be related to the stage on which grayscale images become monochrome (downsampling happens earlier), but after the second pass they are still not downsampled.16:02.55
kens grayscale images don'become monochrome16:03.26
bodqhrohro_ kens: so why do they become ccitt-encoded?16:05.22
kens if they start as monochrome16:05.41
bodqhrohro_ Actually, I don't know if pdfimages make difference between grayscale and monochrome images; it prints that all of them are grayscale.16:06.50
And identify prints that about the original PNG files too.16:07.14
kens: anyway, if they are even initially monochrome, shouldn't -dDownsampleMonoImages=true -dMonoImageResolution=300 -dMonoImageDownsampleThreshold=1.0 handle this?16:09.20
kens handle what ?16:09.34
bodqhrohro_ kens: downsampling all of monochrome images to 300 DPI16:09.54
kens it does16:10.07
Its currently 17:10 on a Friday afternoon. I'd suggest that if you have a question you post an example file and command line and I'll look at it tomorrow16:11.16
bodqhrohro_ kens: while preparing an MWE, I came to the clarification of the problem. Monochrome images seem to be downscaled only in integer number of times, that's why they are not downscaled if PPI is only a bit large than 300. Probably something specific to /Subsample filter?16:28.55
kens you can only use subsample with monochrome16:29.41
if you use anything else it becomes grayscale16:29.57
bodqhrohro_ kens: gs doesn't even permit me to do this: "The only Downsample filter for monochrome images is Subsample, ignoring request."16:32.53
kens yes16:33.08
bodqhrohro_ kens: so the documentation is wrong about the default MonoImageDownsampleType=/Bicubic in /prepress preset? I tested it and got the same behaviour as with /printer.16:41.37
kens then its the docsthat are wrong16:42.07
