artifexirc-bot <RayJohnston> flibble: we'd probably only switch if there were better glyph coverage than the ones we ship with. Adding fonts to Ghostscript is fairly simple -- they don't have to be compiled in or even placed anyplace "special". The -sFONTPATH=____ lets fonts be automatically be added dynamically if a requested font isn't there.15:42.03
<RayJohnston> flibble: as far as encoding, @chrisl is our font expert, and @KenSharp knows a lot about fonts as well.15:43.09
<flibble> I suspect that there are less glyphs in the risc os fonts than the ones you currently have, but feel free to pass on the details incase having a "second source" for things would be useful15:44.35
<chrisl> Considering the relatively large number of problems in the conversion process, I doubt they're much use, tbh15:46.07
artifexirc-bot <flibble> nods15:47.05
<flibble> from a personal point of view, I've been archiving acorn and risc os bits for several years now, so the fonts were next on the list :)15:47.45
<chrisl> But I can guarantee someone will want use them with gs, so it's good to know where/what they are15:47.53
<flibble> heh, yeah, when I posted on twitter, some ex-risc os types seemed very happy and perhaps never knew they were just Times, helvetica and courier :)15:48.47
<chrisl> It would be interesting to know who designed them for Acorn - that's probably lost in the mists of time, though15:49.32
<flibble> Also I might use the outline version of the bitmap system font that came with risc os for some retro inspired artwork15:49.38
<flibble> Yeah, I wondered about that too. One theory would be a place called "Electronic Font Foundary", they were one of the earliest places that did acorn fonts15:50.20
<KenSharp> @chrisl its barely possible Ian might know and remember15:51.10
  <chrisl> Oh, yeh, that's a point....15:51.25
<chrisl> TBH, I've enough to do right now without trawling through tables of glyphs, comparing fonts!15:53.11
  <flibble> :)15:53.28
<KenSharp> Actually replacing our existing fonts would be awkward, because every test file which used them would then render differently, which would make hay with out automated testing15:54.22

<flibble> I've just had flashbacks to when updating freetype in an app I used to work on caused 2000 automated test to fail, as they all rendered slightly differently15:55.35
<KenSharp> Yeah we get that pretty much every time we upgrade FreeTye15:55.56

<Robin_Watts> I suspect it was EFF, yes, though probably that was before EFF was EFF 🙂15:57.17
<flibble> aparently EFF started in 1984, so it could still be them15:59.23
<Robin_Watts> Acorns initial font renderer (for Arthur, the precursor to RISC OS) was bitmap based. The vector based one came in shortly thereafter (for the second version of Arthur, I think, or maybe for the first release of RISC OS ). Certainly I coded stuff using it back before 1990.15:59.28
<flibble> I think the man who was eff has died though, so we can't just ask him :(16:00.27
  <Robin_Watts> Eduoard Poor, yes.23:00.52
<Robin_Watts> His Son runs the business now, we (Artifex) spoke to him not so long ago.23:01.26
